Is your dog escaping or challenging the fence often?
Is the wire break alarm sounding from your fence transmitter?
Do the receiver batteries appear to be dead?
Are the light son the fence transmitter out?
If you’re experiencing any of these issues, you might be able to troubleshoot the problem yourself by following our handy step-by-step troubleshooting method!
First, check to see if your receiver collar beeps at the edge of the yard.
The easiest place to know and test where the boundary wire is located is probably your driveway. The collar should beep about 4-6 inches from the wire.
the batteries are still good
the transmitter is sending out its signal
the dog collar is hearing the transmitter’s signal
Troubleshooting Collar Contact – Pet Stop of Virginia
If your dog is escaping and you’ve already checked the basics, there are only a few likely causes left:
• The collar is too loose (most common)
• The collar beeps but doesn’t correct (rare, but possible)
• The correction level is set too low (unlikely if training has been completed and the dog was respecting the fence)
If the collar is too loose:
Proper collar fit is key—especially for dogs with long hair or thick undercoats. The collar should sit snugly near the chin and just below the ears, where the neck is thinnest.
Try this “Fat-Free” Collar Adjustment Technique:
With your left hand, gently pull your dog’s fur and skin back toward the tail.
With your right hand, pull the nylon collar forward at the top of the neck so the receiver sits under the ears.
On the underside of the neck, pull the fur back again, press the receiver box away from the neck and forward toward the nose.
Release the collar first, then the fur.
Remove any slack so the probes make light, consistent contact with the skin.
This method helps keep the collar securely in place and ensures your dog receives the intended correction level.
Pro Tip: For dogs with thick undercoats, we recommend using spring-loaded probes to maintain better contact.
Important: Do not leave the collar on for more than 12 hours in the same position to avoid skin irritation.
There may be a problem with your wire or transmitter.
Weak Signal or Beeping Only Near the Wire – Pet Stop of Virginia
If the collar only beeps when very close to the boundary wire, it may indicate damaged or deteriorating wire that hasn't completely broken yet.
Be sure to also check your wall-mounted transmitter:
• Confirm it’s securely plugged in
• The transmitter light should be on
• Pet Stop® transmitters should display a number (typically around 12)
⚠️ If the transmitter alarm is sounding, you likely have a broken wire and will need a service visit to locate and repair the break.
When did you last replace the batteries? You might need to purchase new batteries.
No Beep at the Wire? Try This Quick Test – Pet Stop of Virginia
If you're not getting a beep at the boundary wire, try holding the receiver collar close to the transmitter.
If the collar beeps near the transmitter, this confirms the battery is live and the collar is functioning.
If there's no beep at all, the battery may be dead or the collar may need servicing.
